The model
Price, then the horse.
This is not a copied football board and not a morning-line reprint. A consistent edge is a small one, over hundreds of bets, on a corner of the card. Big scores are variance.
1
The pool takes a cut
US win, place, and show take about 15–20% out. Exotics often take 20–30%. A random bet loses about that much. A favorite bet blindly loses after the cut too. The edge has to be bigger than the takeout.
2
Value, not winners
A bet is positive only when our chance is higher than the chance in the odds, by enough to clear the takeout and our own error. 4-1 implies about 20%. A honest 28% is an overlay. A 4-5 favorite we rate 55% is still a bad price. The play is a pass.
3
Pass most races
The public bets almost everything. We do not. A consistent edge is a small ROI, often single digits to low teens, with long losing runs. A big score is variance. It is not the method.
4
A figure, then the tote
Speed, pace, class, intent, and the trip make a win chance. Bet only when the tote is longer than the fair odds. If nothing is an overlay, skip the race. A morning line is not the tote, and it is not a model.
5
Pace, not the two fastest
A race is often who is alone on the lead against who gets cooked in a duel. The public overbets early speed and underprices the closer. That shows up in a small exacta: lone speed on top of closers, or the horse who sits the right trip. Not a spread that covers the field.
6
Class the pool has not priced
A drop whose figures already fit, a lightly raced horse ahead of its number, a course-and-distance specialist. The market is sharpest on graded stakes and Saturday features. Edges, when they exist, sit in handicaps and race types we have actually studied.
7
The books
The corner is not one meet. A day is a thoroughbred track we can bet on FanDuel Racing, or on DraftKings Racing in a state that has it. Arizona and Virginia are not on the DraftKings Racing list, so the ticket from here is FanDuel. Harness is not this desk. Quarter horses are not this desk. Keeneland is the meet when it is open. A dark Monday there is not a dark day.
8
Flat stake
About 1–2% of the bank. No martingale. No double after a loss. Full Kelly on a noisy guess is how a bank dies. Judge it on hundreds of bets, not on one photo.
9
The cheaper pool
A win bet in a lower-takeout pool beats a superfecta unless the pace really is mispriced. Chasing a horse already bet down is late. By the time the gamble is obvious, the value is often gone.
10
What we will not do
Not every favorite. Not every class drop. Not every hot jockey. Not every horse that shortens. Not an exotic that includes half the field. Any plan that promises consistent wins without a pass is selling the variance.
